On April 28,former United Nations Under-Secretary-General Mr. Sha Zukangandformer Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus and Uganda Mr. Zhao Yalivisited Daystar Academy’s Beigao Campus. They were joined by Mrs. Sha and Ms. Liu Jinfeng, former Consul General at the Chinese Consulate in Busan.

Mr. Sha Zukang (sixth from right), Mr. Zhao Yali (third from right), and Ms. Liu Jinfeng (sixth from left) with Daystar Academy executive board member Jack Hsu (five from left), leadership, faculty, and students.

Mr. Sha Zukang is a prominent figure in China's diplomatic circles. He has held a wide range of important positions, including: First Secretary and Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations, New York; Counsellor and Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador for Disarmament Affairs to the UN Office in Geneva, Director-General of the Department of Arms Control of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Permanent Representative and Ambassador of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland. He was one of the architects of a series of major arms control and disarmament initiatives and has been both a participant in and a witness to China's diplomacy since the beginning of the reform and opening-up period.

Mr. Sha also playeda key role in promoting the formulation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)during his tenure as UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, helping establish them as a global agenda for development.

Campus Tour

Fifth grade students Thomas Wang and Miya Zhang served as junior guides, leading the guests on a tour of Daystar’s campus and state-of-the-art facilities.

Interview

Eleventh grade students Kerry Wang and Ethan Yang, both passionate about working for international organizations, seized the opportunity to speak directly with the seasoned diplomats:

Q: What should we do if we want to pursue a career in diplomacy or with international organizations?

Mr. Sha Zukang:It’s wonderful that you have such aspirations! It means you're not only thinking of serving the people of China but also have a vision for serving humanity at large.

If you want to prepare for a career in diplomacy, I have two main suggestions:

First, Daystar is a pioneering school; this was clear during my visit. Make the most of the learning environment here. Focus on studying, and do so without distractions.

Second, a good diplomat must understand their own country. For example, as a Chinese citizen, you should deeply understand China’s rich and profound history, as well as the country’s economy, society, and culture. In addition, you must understand the world—global issues, the realities of specific countries, and how international systems work.

I also noticed how well your students speak both English and Chinese—this is excellent. Language is essential: without strong language skills, there is no diplomacy. However, don’t neglect Chinese while you’re strengthening your English. Both are vital.

Mr. Zhao Yali:Besides language skills, physical fitness is also extremely important.

Mr. Sha Zukang:Without good health, nothing else matters. When I was a diplomat, although my workload was intense, I was able to endure because I maintained a dedicated exercise routine. I practiced gymnastics as a child, played tennis and badminton, swam regularly, and even took up golf at 66. I saw the younger students running around the playground earlier—tanned and energetic. That’s great!

Mr. Zhao Yali:Currently, the proportion of Chinese professionals in international organizations is still too low. Students like you from schools like Daystar have a real advantage when it comes to pursuing such careers—your language proficiency and knowledge base are very competitive. It's truly admirable that you want to serve the welfare of both China and the global community!

Q: What role does China play in global sustainable development?

Mr. Sha Zukang:Today, China is a leader in promoting sustainable development. We’re number one globally in wind energy, solar power, and nuclear energy development, and our hydropower is advancing rapidly. In the field of clean energy, China is leading the way. Just recently, CCTV reported that China’s wind and solar installed capacity has surpassed that of fossil fuels—meaning that in the future, our energy will be primarily from renewable sources rather than oil or coal.

I was fortunate to be involved in developing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during my tenure as UN Under-Secretary-General in charge of Economic and Social Affairs. These goals have now become the global blueprint for development. I’m glad to see you taking an interest in these important issues!

The values emphasized by Mr. Sha and Mr. Zhao—language proficiency, well-rounded knowledge, and physical health—are at the heart of Daystar’s holistic education.

The ideals these veteran diplomats have spent their careers pursuing align closely with Daystar’s mission to nurture socially innovative global citizens with a heart for the world.

Daystar Academy regularly invites leaders and distinguished guests from all walks of life to campus—opening doors for students to broaden their horizons and engage with the real world.
