The 25th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (IEEE ITSC 2022) is the annual flagship conference sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society, with the theme of "Blockchain-based ITS: The Human Use of Cyber-Physical-Social Transportation Systems". This Distributed Hybrid Conference (DHC) starts from September 19 and lasts to October 7. During this period, a total of 145 Distributed Hybrid Conferences will be held in an orderly manner.


On September 22, ITSC 2022 arranged in a distributed hybrid way and held SEVEN Special Sessions and ONE Workshop of almost all frontier research and hot topics in the field of intelligent transportation, in terms of Collaborative Control and Management of EV Powertrains based on Intelligent Transport Systems, Advanced control technology for connected electrified vehicles, Autonomous Transportation System, Connected Vehicles and Cyber-Physical Transportation Systems, Parallel Vision for Intelligent Vehicles, Intelligent Freeways Preparing for CAVs, Towards sustainable traffic via trajectory optimisation and control strategies for Connected and Automated vehicles, ICVES - Beijing.


11 session chairs and 45 session presenters gathered to share their recent work and perspectives, related to advanced blockchain-based intelligent transportation systems.

Special Session 10:Collaborative Control and Management of EV Powertrains based on Intelligent Transport Systems


Session Chair:Yuanjian Zhang (Loughborough University)


Schedule: 08:00-09:15 (Beijing time), September 22, 2022.


Abstract:Electrification and automation are two major trends in the automotive industry. Electrified Vehicles (EVs) would be a key part of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and would be benefited from the all-encompassing Internet-of-the-Things. Currently, the development and control of EV powertrains are separated from the ultimate ITS due to the lack of theories and technical solutions that connect and incorporate the three functional domains, i.e., powertrain, driving systems, and traffic infrastructures, across different platforms. This special session aims to collect the latest research from automotive engineering, IT, computer science, and transportation engineering that addresses the challenges in terms of 1) multi-objective optimizations considering traffic efficiency, drivability, and energy economy; 2) trustworthy AI-based decision making with multiple sources of traffic/vehicle information; and 3) observing and balancing of long-term goals (e.g., component aging), mid-term goals (e.g., traffic efficiency), and short-term goals (e.g., fuel consumptions) in real-time powertrain control.

Special Session 11: Advanced control technology for connected electrified vehicles

Abstract:In recent years, electrified vehicles combined with the Internet of Things (IoT) have attracted great attention of academia and industry and domestic and foreign governments. With the development of modern communication and network technologies, connected electrified vehicles have the potential to achieve safe, energy-saving, efficient and comfortable driving and thus have become the trend of the automotive industry. Advanced optimization and control technologies play a vital role in improving the performance of connected electrified vehicles and the efficiency of mobility and transportation systems. The aim of this session is to introduce the state-of-the-art and cutting-edge achievements of connected electrified vehicles and related advanced optimization and control technologies and to prove an opportunity for researchers from control communities and the automotive industry to acquire frontier knowledge on connected electrified vehicles.

Special Session 12: Autonomous Transportation System

Abstract:With the continuous promotion of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and the Internet of Things, an autonomous transportation system that can proactively respond to traffic demand, automatically operate vehicles, proactively manage infrastructure and proactively adapt to external environment is becoming a new research hotspot. The essence of autonomous transportation system is to reduce human intervention in the transportation system and improve the autonomous capacity of the transportation system. It completes the transport of people and things by self-organizing operation and autonomous services with logic: autonomous-perception, autonomous-learning, autonomous-decision-making, and autonomous-action. The goals are to make the transportation system safer, greener, more efficient, more convenient and more economical.

Special Session 13:Connected Vehicles and Cyber-Physical Transportation Systems

Abstract:In recent years, increasing vehicles have resulted in many traffic problems, e.g., congestion, accidents, pollution. Considerable efforts have been devoted to intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to solve these problems. As an emerging ITS application, the connected vehicle system (CVS) is an economic and effective solution to increase traffic throughput, enhance driving safety and decrease environmental pollution. In particular, by information shared among vehicles through Vehicle-toVehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to Infrastructure (V2I) wireless network, CVS automate the vehicle motion to raise safety, ride comfort, platooning control, fuel economy, etc. However, due to the open nature of V2X wireless network, CVSs are particularly vulnerable to cyber-physical attacks. By integrating physical/functional safety and cyber-physical security, control issues of CVSs are critical and challenging, if not properly addressed, can result in human safety risk and huge economic losses.


Currently, many issues for cyber-physical security and control of CVSs are still open and far from being fully solved in facing of complex vehicular dynamics, communication constraints, rich functionality concerns, small computation loads and open environment.

Special Session 14:Parallel Vision for Intelligent Vehicles

Abstract:Parallel vision plays a central technological role in the emerging global scientific and research communities on intelligent vehicles. This session aims to bring together academic scholars and industrial practitioners to share scientific and technological advances as well as to gain a deeper understanding of the vision-based techniques especially parallel vision for intelligent vehicles. The session focuses on recent theoretical development of parallel vision and practical applications for intelligent vehicles.

Special Session 15:Intelligent Freeways Preparing for CAVs

Abstract:Scene layout estimation is crucial for decision planning of intelligent vehicles and scene library enriching of the intelligent driving test. However, current methods are usually limited to pixel-level representations that do not naturally support inference and planning required for intelligent vehicles and cannot directly provide structured samples for the scene library. To overcome the above issue, we propose a novel parameter extraction framework to estimate the parametric layout of various road scenes, which contains three stages: semantic segmentation stage, occlusion reasoning stage, and parameter prediction stage, responsible for compressing redundant information of RGB images, restoring the occluded area, and generating parametric layout of the road, respectively. Specifically, a residual-based occlusion reasoning method is adopted, which adds pre-acquired residuals to the original reasoning results for preserving small-size objects as much as possible. And a mixture of domains is introduced in the domain-adaptation-based parameter prediction, which avoids discriminator only guiding by hard label, and leverages the inter-domain information. Experimental results on KITTI demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model compared to the state-of-the-art parametric layout estimation method.

Special Session 16:Towards sustainable traffic via trajectory optimisation and control strategies for Connected and Automated Vehicles

Abstract:Traffic congestion represents a significant challenge particularly for large and growing metropolitan areas, which is promised to be relieved via the presence of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs). However, recent research has shown that the impact of CAVs is highly dependent on the driving behaviors and design parameters, as well as on the capability of interacting and coordinating with other vehicles (not necessarily CAVs) and the infrastructure. Therefore, trajectory optimisation and control strategies, affecting, for example, the longitudinal and lateral behaviour of CAVs, are expected to have a strong potential to promote more sustainable traffic, by improving traffic conditions in urban and motorway traffic networks, reducing delays, alleviating environmental pollution, and increasing traffic safety. The goal of this Special Session is to bring together representatives from academia and industries to share and discuss ideas on the state of the art, novel theoretical approaches, and applications within the field of trajectory optimisation and control with CAVs, focusing particularly on traffic impacts, including eco-driving and congestion mitigation.

Abstract:V2X technologies, which include both direct communication-based mode (such as DSRC, LTE V2X, etc.) and public network-based mode (such as 4G, 5G, etc.), show obvious advantages to solve the difficult social problems such as traffic congestion, automobile safety and environmental protection and so on. Moreover, with the introduction of V2X technology, the service mode of intelligent transportation system and the system architecture have changed dramatically, but also brings significant challenges. From the test viewpoints, corresponding test schemes are quite different from that of traditional. Recently, both academic and industries provide a series solution to promote authentication progress of commercial V2X. The interesting part of this special session is covered on the different challenging and important practical aspects such as V2X communication test, V2X application test, road side information providing ability test.

The 25th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (IEEE ITSC 2022) is the annual flagship conference sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. From 1997 to 2021, it has been held 24 times, covering 24 cities in 12 countries in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania. The main conference of the 25th IEEE ITSC 2022 will be held in Macau, China. IEEE ITSC 2022 welcomes articles and presentations in the areas of intelligent transportation systems and automated driving, conveying new advances and developments in theory, modeling, simulation, testing, case studies, as well as large-scale deployment. The conference particularly invites and encourages prospective authors to share their recent research work, findings, perspectives, and developments related to advanced blockchain-based intelligent transportation systems.
