Indonesia and China After 75 Years of Bilateral Relation:

The Way Forward

In 2025, the Republic of Indonesia and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic - bilateral relations. The peak of the relationship between the two countries is symbolized by the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in 2013, encompassing cooperation across the five main pillars namely political, economic, maritime, people-to-people, and security cooperation.

Even after the CSP, the bilateral relations between Indonesia and China continue to deepen marked by the frequent high-level visits and the numerous implementation of concrete cooperation in terms of trade, investment, infrastructure, maritime affairs, and multilateral engagement. Indonesia continues to become one of China’s most reliable trading partners in Asia and ASEAN while China remains Indonesia’s largest trading partner. Cooperations between the two countries have shown that they have contributed positively to the economic growth of both countries as well as regional stability.

Facing the road ahead, Indonesia and China are contemplating a promising yet complex future. Currently, multilateralism is pitted against unilateralism. Trade wars have begun. Regional hotspots seem to be on the rise. Domestic turmoil is almost an everyday news. Nature and natural resources are depleting. These challenges would question the basic premises and relevance of Indonesia’s “independent and active” foreign policy and China’s “win-win solution” as well as “Community With A Shared Future” and putting them on a real life test.

To commemorate these milestones and provide answer to the existing geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Beijing, in cooperation with the Center for China & Globalization, are co-organizing a Discussion Forum entitled “Indonesia and China After 75 Years of Bilateral Relation: The Way Forward.” The event aims to get the best ideas, perspective, and recommendations from think tanks, academics, experts, and government representatives of both countries on the future trajectory of policy and strategic decisions for cooperation. In doing so, the discussions are expected to revolve around reflections of achievements, pending / resumption of ongoing cooperation and future potentials.
